My attempt to document
WDW's early years has benefited greatly from the assistance of many
people. It started with my parents, who first took me to the
Magic Kingdom in October 1971 ... surely oblivious to what impact this
place would have on me. Since then, dozens of other family
members, friends and strangers have generously provided
information, photos and recordings that made the process much more
enlightening than I could have reasonably expected. Most of them are
listed below. Some requested anonymity and others I am
unable
to mention (an
e-mail crash in 2003 caused the loss of some names).
While I can't say all of these individuals
condone WYW, they did help make it possible.
No one's encouragement,
however, eclipses that of my
amazing wife, Amy. She'll never read
this or any of the pages I've written, but her support was and remains vital.
The proliferation of online resources
that has
occurred since WYW came to the internet in 1996 has surprised me as
it went from a
handful of sites with small photos to near-countless
galleries of high-resolution pictures posted en masse, with links to once-rare audio
and video becoming commonplace and - if that wasn't enough -
torrent files making it painfully easy to download
source-quality park background music and old Disney TV shows at high
speeds.
In much the same way that people once drove to record stores in
the hopes of finding a specific Icicle Works import, Disney collectors
once relied on their personal connections to other collectors and
convention gatherings for old guide books, pictures and music. I had
to create a newsletter, for example, before I had any real success in
locating old photos of If You Had Wings in the early 1990s. The
internet changed everything, and even if some people miss the more
arduous and rewarding nature of "the hunt," my guess is that few resist ready access to
what's on flickr and mousebits on principle.
The only grief this causes
me is that giving proper credit for photos or recordings has become
difficult from the standpoint of verification. In 1992, if someone
sent me a picture of a Swan Boat it was a singular moment, achieved via
the postal service, and I'll pretty much always remember that person's
name. Now, with a spurious electronic discharge of media only two
clicks away 24/7, there's so much crazy shit flying around everywhere that
true authorship can be impossible to prove. Someone e-mailed me a
.jpg file of RCA's Home of Future Living in 2007 and in 2008 I saw the
same photo on another person's photobucket account. If I use it I'll
try to credit the right person, but may never know who actually took the
picture. So if an image on WYW is not attributed to someone by name,
it's generally because it either came from WDW's own media or because I
took the photo myself (any photo with widenyourworld.net on it fits into
that latter category). Otherwise I've done my best to cite the
origin. Until such time as this site does something commercial,
which will probably be the 12th of Never, I think that's a fair
approach.
As for
artwork, photos and diagrams from WDW/WED archives, my
position is that if someone sends me scans of this type of material
with permission to use it, I may do so without citing the name of the
person in direct conjunction with the item for the express purpose of
protecting the sender (even if they don't think they need
it!). I'm not claiming authorship of those items and won't
watermark them, but in general I think concept art and visual
documentation of ex-attractions should be out there for WDW fans to
enjoy vs. hiding in file drawers. If I can help achieve that
while simultaneously using the images to provide historical context,
without
getting people in trouble, I
will. Any helpful individuals NOT requesting anonymity, however, will be listed
on this page no matter what.
Sometimes people e-mail to see if they can use something from WYW. The answer
is always yes, but I do appreciate having the site mentioned as the
source.
